LEYAL Ship Recycling Ltd. (LEYAL Gemi Söküm Ldt Şti) is the leading ship dismantling and recycling company in Turkey. Established in early 1980s, the Company has evolved to become the owner of the largest ship dismantling facilities in the country. With approximately 5 hectares of land dedicated to ship dismantling, the company is capable of directly or indirectly processing up to 100,000 tons -nominal capacity- of steel per year. LEYAL is fully licensed for its ship recycling operations by the relevant competent authorities in Turkey, namely the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (in Turkey the three ministries jointly regulate the ship recycling industry).

The Company's recycling facilities are located near the city of Aliaga on Turkey's Aegean coast, approximately 60 Km North of the port of Izmir. The surrounding area is a well-established industrial province (the largest in Turkey) also including two ports, an LNG terminal, power generation plant, a major refinery and petrochemical complex. Aliaga is also home to a number of major steel mills (Turkey is the world's No. 10 steel producer in 2010). and provides easy access to facilities dealing with downstream waste management

Turkey, apart from being a European Union Associate Member, is the only OECD country with a well established ship recycling industry. LEYAL was the first European ship recycling company to apply the European Union Notification Procedure for the Transboundary Movement of Waste (EU Regulation 259/93), in the case of the dismantling of the German Navy destroyer ex-Rommel. LEYAL's commitment to its workers and to the environment is paramount, having an excellent record for worker safety and environmental protection, and abiding to the most strict national and international regulations.

In 2006, LEYAL became the first ship recycling company in Turkey to be awarded ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification by a leading British assessment, verification and certification body accredited by both UKAS and ANSI-ASQ.

LEYAL is also proud to have been contracted for the recycling of the two most high profile vessels to arrive to Turkey for recycling in the case of a 150,000 dwt FPSO from a European oil major (the first and only FPSO to have been recycled in Turkey), and more recently, having been awarded a contract by the British Navy for the recycling of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible. Furthermore in recent years LEYAL has also been the recycling facility of choice for a number of other high profile vessels such as the six British Navy Type 42 destroyers HMS-Cardiff / HMS-Newcastle / HMS-Glasgow / HMS-Exeter / HMS-Southampton / HMS-Nottingham, the 50,000 deadweight RFA-Oakleaf also from the British Navy, and the 40,000 deadweight ton FPSO from a major deepwater offshore energy company from the USA, with the explicit approval of the Australian Navy.

Working with LEYAL also carries the stamp of approval of the International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA), a Dutch non-government organization formed to promote safe and environmentally sound ship recycling around the world, especially in the absence of globally enforceable "green" standards for ship recycling.
